Criminal Law Blog Ghana is pleased to introduce its quarterly newsletter: a free compilation of selected blog articles brought together around a shared theme. Our first issue, Rethinking Punishment in Ghana: Sentencing and Non-Custodial Justice, explores what punishment should achieve and how Ghana’s criminal justice system can balance accountability, public safety, rehabilitation, and reintegration. The issue brings together four articles:
- Theories of Punishment and their Place in Ghana’s Criminal Justice System
- The Community Service Bill, 2026: Learning from Experience, Avoiding Excess
- Beyond Community Service: Ghana’s Need for a Comprehensive Non-Custodial Sentencing Framework
- The Rehabilitation of Young Offenders Under Ghana’s Juvenile Justice System: A Grey Area in the Law
Together, these contributions examine the ideas behind punishment, the design of community service reform, the need for broader alternatives to imprisonment, and gaps in rehabilitative treatment for young offenders. The newsletter offers readers a convenient way to revisit these discussions in one document. We thank Her Worship Georgette Carmel Lutterodt, Her Worship Anastacia Yaa Agyeiwaa Karimu, Her Worship Dromo Afarley Djarbeng, and Tracy Abena Serwaa Frimpong for their contributions.
We invite you to read, share, and join the conversation about the future of punishment in Ghana.
